Why messages cannot be read from the outside
Every WhatsApp message is encrypted on the sender's phone with a key that only the recipient's devices hold. WhatsApp's own servers pass the message along without being able to read it, and they do not keep it once it is delivered. There is no database of chats that a third party could query by number, however the page describing it is worded.
What chat history by number websites really do
If a page claims to show another person's WhatsApp messages and asks only for their number, it is not describing something real.
- Show a fake progress bar and a blurred result, then ask for payment, a survey or an app install to unlock it.
- Collect the number you typed, and often yours, for spam lists.
- Push browser notifications or subscriptions that are hard to cancel.
- Deliver nothing, because there is nothing they could deliver.
The only ways chats are actually read
Someone's chats can be read by a person who holds their unlocked phone, by a device linked to their account under Linked devices, which requires that phone in hand to set up and shows up in its list, or by spyware installed on it. All three need physical access to the other person's phone. Doing any of them without consent is illegal in most countries, and none of them is what an online tracker does.
What you can see: presence
WhatsApp does share one thing with your account about your contacts: whether they are online now and, if they allow it, when they were last seen. That is presence, and it is the only signal ChatWatch uses. It links to your own WhatsApp as an extra device, like WhatsApp Web, and records each time a contact you add comes online and goes offline.
From those events you get a timeline of their activity, their last seen history, their night-time activity, and how long each session lasted. No message content is involved at any point: ChatWatch does not subscribe to messages and never requests chat history.
Can you tell who someone is chatting with?
Not with certainty, and nobody can from the outside. What can be measured is overlap. If two contacts you track are repeatedly online at the same minutes, far more often than chance would produce, that is a pattern. ChatWatch calls this Chat Probability and presents it as a likelihood, because it is a statistic about timing, not proof that two people were talking to each other.
If you think someone is reading your chats
- 01On your phone open WhatsApp, Settings, Linked devices, and log out any device you do not recognise.
- 02Turn on two-step verification under Settings, Account, so your number cannot be registered on another phone without your PIN.

Is there a free tool to see WhatsApp chat history of any number online?
- No. Messages are end-to-end encrypted and are not stored where any tool could reach them. Sites that offer this show fake results or ask you to pay for nothing.
Can ChatWatch read messages or see who someone talks to?
- No. It records online and offline times only. Chat Probability estimates how often two tracked contacts are online together; it never sees a conversation.
Can WhatsApp itself read my chats?
- WhatsApp says it cannot, because the encryption keys stay on users' devices. Backups are a separate matter: they are only end-to-end encrypted if you turn that on in Settings, Chats, Chat backup.
What is a WhatsApp chat tracker, then?
- In practice it is an online-activity tracker: it shows when someone uses WhatsApp, not what they write. Anything promising more is spyware or a scam.
