What never notifies the other person
- Opening your chat with them, as often as you like.
- Seeing online or last seen under their name.
- Opening their profile, their photo or their About text.
- Taking a screenshot of a chat or a profile. WhatsApp only blocks screenshots of view-once media, and sends no alert for ordinary ones.
- Searching for their name or number.
What does leave a trace
So checking someone's online status is silent, but doing it by hand is not invisible: you are online yourself every time you look.
- Your own online label. While WhatsApp is open on your screen, anyone allowed to see your online status sees you as online, including the person whose chat you are looking at.
- Blue ticks. If you open a chat with unread messages from them, the messages are marked as read, unless you have turned Read receipts off.
- Status views. If you watch their status update, your name appears in their viewers list, unless Read receipts is off on your side.
- Typing…. If you start writing in their chat, they see it while the chat is open on their side.
Do apps that show who viewed your WhatsApp profile work?
No. WhatsApp does not record profile visits, so there is nothing for any app to read. Apps and websites that promise a list of who checked you show random contacts, and many exist to collect phone numbers or push ads. The same goes for anything claiming to tell you who checked your last seen.
Does a tracker notify the person?
A tracker that works from the outside cannot notify them, because it never touches their phone. ChatWatch links to your own WhatsApp account as an extra device, the way WhatsApp Web does, and records the online and offline moments WhatsApp already shows your account for the contacts you add. It sends them no message, no request and no receipt, and it does not appear in their app.
The device does appear on your side, under Settings, Linked devices, on your own phone, where you can remove it at any time. And if the contact has hidden their online status from you, there is simply nothing to record.
How to look without showing as online
Inside WhatsApp the only way is to hide your own presence: set Last seen to Nobody and Who can see when I'm online to Same as last seen. The cost is reciprocity: WhatsApp then hides other people's last seen and online from you, which defeats the purpose of checking.
That trade-off is the reason people use a recording tool instead of opening the app again and again: the history builds up without you being in the chat.

Can someone see how many times I opened their chat?
- No. WhatsApp does not count or report chat opens or profile views to anyone.
Does WhatsApp notify when you screenshot a profile picture or a chat?
- No. Only view-once photos and videos are protected, by blocking the screenshot, and even then no alert is sent.
Can they see that I am online when I check their last seen?
- Yes, if your online status is visible to them. You show as online whenever WhatsApp is open on your screen, whatever you are looking at.
Is tracking someone's online status legal?
- It depends on where you both live and on your relationship. Presence that WhatsApp already shows you is lawful to look at in many places, but harassment and stalking laws apply. Track only people you have a lawful basis to monitor.
