How to know if someone is online on WhatsApp

Open your chat with that person and look under their name at the top. If it says online, WhatsApp is open on one of their devices right now. If it shows a last seen time or nothing at all, they are either offline or have chosen not to show you. The rest of this guide covers what online really means, why it sometimes never appears, and how to know when someone was online without watching the screen.

Check it in WhatsApp, step by step

  1. 01Open WhatsApp and tap the chat with the person. If you have no chat yet, start one from your contacts; you do not need to send anything.
  2. 02Look directly under their name at the top of the chat.
  3. 03Online means the app is open and in use right now. Typing… or recording audio… means they are writing to you at this moment.
  4. 04A last seen time means they are offline and let you see when they were last connected. An empty line means WhatsApp is not showing you their presence.

What online means, and what it does not

Online means WhatsApp is open in the foreground on one of that person's devices and connected to the internet. That includes WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp Desktop, so someone can show as online while their phone is on the table.

It does not mean they are talking to you, that they have read your message, or that they are chatting with anyone at all. They may be scrolling a group, listening to a voice note or checking a status. Blue ticks tell you a message was read; online only tells you the app is open.

Why you might not see online at all

From the outside these four look identical: a blank line under the name. WhatsApp does not tell you which one it is.

  • They hid it. Under Settings, Privacy, Last seen and online, they can set Who can see when I'm online to Same as last seen and restrict last seen to Nobody or to a list that excludes you.
  • You hid yours. WhatsApp's privacy is reciprocal: if you do not share your last seen and online, you cannot see other people's either.
  • They blocked you. A blocked contact sees no online, no last seen and no profile photo updates.
  • You have never exchanged messages. WhatsApp may withhold presence from accounts the person has never chatted with.

How to know without watching the screen

Checking by hand has two limits. You only catch someone online if you happen to look at the right second, and every time you open WhatsApp to look, you show as online too to everyone allowed to see you.

An online tracker solves the first problem by looking continuously. ChatWatch links to your own WhatsApp account as an extra device, the same way WhatsApp Web does, and records every time a contact you add comes online and goes offline, with the time and the length of each session. You read the history when you want, instead of staring at a chat.

It records only what WhatsApp already shows your account. If the person has hidden their online status from you, there is nothing to record, and no tool that works from the outside can change that.

Will they know you checked?

No. WhatsApp does not notify anyone when you open their chat, look at their profile or see that they are online. ChatWatch does not contact the people you track, installs nothing on their phone and does not appear in their app. The only trace of a manual check is your own online label while the app is open.

What nobody can show you

  • Who they are talking to. Presence is per account, not per conversation.
  • What they are writing. Messages are end-to-end encrypted and never leave the two phones in readable form.
  • Their online history from before you started recording. WhatsApp keeps no past presence, so it cannot be recovered by anyone.

Seeing who is online: questions

Can I see if someone is online on WhatsApp without opening the chat?

Not inside WhatsApp: the label only appears in the open chat. A tracker such as ChatWatch records it for the contacts you add, so you can see the history later without opening any chat.

Does online mean they are chatting with someone?

No. It means the app is open. They may be reading, scrolling or listening to audio. Only typing… in your own chat tells you they are writing, and only to you.

Why does it never say online for one contact?

Most likely they hid their online status or last seen from you, or blocked you. If you have hidden your own, WhatsApp also hides everyone else's from you.

Can someone be online and show as offline?

Yes. With last seen set to Nobody and online set to Same as last seen, they use WhatsApp normally and nobody sees them online.
