What makes someone show as online
The label disappears a few seconds after they leave the app or lock the screen. It is a live signal, not a record: WhatsApp shows it while it is true and keeps no history of it.
- WhatsApp is open on their screen, on their phone, on WhatsApp Web or on WhatsApp Desktop.
- The device has an internet connection at that moment.
- Their privacy settings let your account see their online status.
What online does not mean
- It does not mean they are talking to someone. They may be reading a group, watching a status, listening to a voice note or changing a setting.
- It does not mean they have read your message. Read is the blue ticks; online says nothing about any particular chat.
- It does not mean they are on their phone. A laptop left open on WhatsApp Web shows as online too.
- It does not mean they are ignoring you. A person can be online for ten seconds to answer someone else and never open your chat.
Online, last seen and typing: the difference
Online is the present: the app is open now. Last seen is the past: the last time the app was open, shown only when the person is offline and allows it. Typing… and recording audio… are specific to your chat and mean they are writing to you at this moment.
They are controlled separately. Under Settings, Privacy, Last seen and online, a person chooses who sees their last seen, and whether their online status is visible to Everyone or to the Same as last seen.
Why someone can look online all the time
Usually because WhatsApp Web or Desktop is open on a computer they use all day. The account shows as online whenever that window is in front, whether or not they are looking at it. People who use WhatsApp for work are the common case.
It can also simply be frequent short sessions. Each time you look, they happen to be on, and memory turns that into always.
Why you never see online for someone
Either they have hidden it from you, by setting online to Same as last seen and restricting last seen, or you have hidden your own, because WhatsApp hides other people's status from anyone who hides theirs. Being blocked has the same effect. From your side all three look the same.
Seeing when someone was online, not just now
WhatsApp only shows the label while you are looking. To know when and for how long someone was online during the day you need a record. ChatWatch links to your own WhatsApp account as an extra device, the way WhatsApp Web does, and logs each time a contact you add comes online and goes offline. It records only what WhatsApp already shows your account; if their status is hidden from you, there is nothing to log.

Does online mean they are chatting with someone?
- No. It means the app is open. What they are doing inside it is not visible to anyone.
Can someone be online without their phone?
- Yes. WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp Desktop count as online for the account, even if the phone is in another room.
If someone is online, did they see my message?
- Not necessarily. Only blue ticks mean a message was read. They can be online without opening your chat.
How long does online stay after they leave?
- A few seconds. After that WhatsApp shows their last seen, if they share it with you, or nothing.
