How to see last seen on WhatsApp if it is hidden

If someone has hidden their last seen from you, no app, website or trick can show it: WhatsApp simply stops sending it to your account. What often still works is their online status, which is a separate setting most people never change. If that is still visible to you, you can record when they are online and get the same answer, when were they last on WhatsApp, without the stamp.

Why a hidden last seen cannot be unhidden

Last seen is not stored on your phone waiting to be unlocked. WhatsApp's servers decide, for each account, whether to send it. When a contact sets last seen to Nobody, or to My contacts except… with you on the list, the servers send your account nothing. There is no hidden field to reveal, which is why this holds whatever software you use.

The tricks that circulate, and why they fail

  • Modified apps such as GB WhatsApp or WhatsApp Plus change how your own app looks and behaves. They cannot make WhatsApp's servers send data they are withholding, and WhatsApp bans accounts that use them.
  • Last seen hidden tracker apps and websites that ask only for a phone number have no access to WhatsApp at all. They show invented data, ads, or a paywall.
  • Hiding your own last seen does not help. It works the other way: once you hide yours, WhatsApp hides everyone else's from you as well.
  • Asking a mutual contact only works if the person did not hide it from them too, and tells you one moment, once.

What is often still visible: online

WhatsApp has two settings on the same screen. Who can see my last seen controls the time stamp. Who can see when I'm online controls the live online label, and it defaults to Everyone. Many people change the first and never touch the second.

To find out, open their chat at a moment you know they are using WhatsApp, for example right after they reply in a group. If online appears under their name, their online status is visible to you even though the last seen stamp is not.

Turn visible online moments into a last seen history

If online is visible, a record of when they come online and go offline tells you more than the stamp ever did: not just the last connection, but every one, with its length. That is what ChatWatch does. It links to your own WhatsApp account as an extra device, like WhatsApp Web, and logs each online and offline event for the numbers you add, 24 hours a day.

The most recent offline event in that record is, in practice, their last seen. It starts from the moment you add the contact; nothing can recover activity from before.

When both are hidden

If the person set online to Same as last seen and last seen excludes you, WhatsApp sends your account no presence at all. ChatWatch will show no activity for that contact, and so will every honest tool. A blank history is the correct result, not a fault.

At that point the only real option is the ordinary one: ask them. Tools that claim to get around it are selling something that does not exist, or something that has to be installed on the other person's phone, which is spyware and illegal in most places without consent.

Hidden, blocked, or just offline?

A missing last seen alone does not mean you are blocked. If you are blocked you also stop seeing profile photo changes, and your messages stay on one grey tick. If messages are delivered with two ticks and the photo still updates, they have hidden their last seen, either from you or from everyone.

Hidden last seen: questions

Is there an app to see hidden last seen on WhatsApp?

No. Apps that claim it either show made-up data or require installing software on the other person's phone. WhatsApp does not send a hidden last seen to any account.

Can ChatWatch see a hidden last seen?

No. It can record online activity only when that person's online status is visible to your account. If they hid that too, the history stays empty.

They hid last seen but I still see them online. Why?

Because online is a separate setting that defaults to Everyone. Unless they set it to Same as last seen, the online label keeps showing.

Will they know I am recording when they are online?

ChatWatch sends nothing to the people you track and installs nothing on their phone. It records what WhatsApp already shows your account.
