What does "last seen" mean on WhatsApp?

"Last seen" is the most recent time a contact had WhatsApp open. "Online" means they have it open right now. Both are read from the same signal, both depend on privacy settings, and neither is kept by WhatsApp once it changes. Here is everything the label does and does not tell you.

Last seen vs. online

Under a contact's name WhatsApp shows one of two things. "Online" means the app is open on their phone at this moment, in the foreground, connected to WhatsApp's servers. "Last seen today at 21:14" means the app was last open at that time and is closed or in the background now.

They are two states of the same thing. When someone opens WhatsApp they become online; the moment they leave, that moment becomes their new last seen. It is overwritten every time they come back, and WhatsApp keeps no record of the previous values.

What last seen does not mean

Reading more into it than "the app was open at that time" is where most misunderstandings start.

  • It does not mean they read your message. Read receipts (blue ticks) are a separate signal.
  • It does not mean they were chatting with anyone. The app was open; that is all.
  • It does not say how long they were online, or how many times that day.
  • It is not always exact to the second: WhatsApp can lag by a minute or so, especially on poor connections.

Why you might not see a last seen at all

WhatsApp lets everyone decide who sees their last seen and online status, under Settings › Privacy › Last seen and online. The options are Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, and Nobody. If a contact has chosen a setting that excludes you, you see nothing where the label would be.

There is a second reason: the setting is reciprocal. If you have hidden your own last seen, WhatsApp hides everyone else's last seen from you as well. Check your own setting before assuming the other person changed theirs.

And a third: being blocked. If a contact has blocked you, their last seen, online status and profile photo updates disappear for you. WhatsApp does not announce a block, so a missing last seen on its own does not prove one.

Does last seen update in real time?

Close to it. The online label appears within seconds of the app being opened, and the last seen stamp is written when the app goes to the background. You need to have the chat open, or reopen it, to see the change; the label does not refresh while you stare at it in every version of WhatsApp.

Can you see someone's last seen if it is hidden?

No. If a contact's settings hide their last seen or online status from you, WhatsApp does not send that information to your account, and no app, website or trick can produce it. Tools that promise to reveal a hidden last seen are either guessing from other signals or lying.

What you can do is keep a record of what you are allowed to see. WhatsApp shows you a single, ever-changing stamp; ChatWatch records every online and offline moment for the contacts you choose, so "last seen" becomes a history you can scroll back through, day by day.

Keeping a last seen history

ChatWatch links to your own WhatsApp as a device, like WhatsApp Web, and logs the presence signal for the numbers you add. Each contact gets a full list of online sessions: when they started, when they ended, how long they lasted. It is the last seen label with a memory.

Last seen questions

What does "last seen today" mean on WhatsApp?

That the contact last had WhatsApp open at the time shown, on the current day. "Last seen yesterday at…" and a date work the same way for earlier days.

Why does it say online but they are not replying?

Online means the app is open, not that they are looking at your chat. They may be in another conversation, in a call, or have the app open in the background on some phones.

Can I hide my last seen and still see other people's?

No. Hiding your last seen also hides everyone else's from you. Hiding your online status works the same way when it is set to Same as last seen.

Does WhatsApp keep a history of last seen?

No. Each new last seen replaces the previous one and WhatsApp keeps no log. A tracker such as ChatWatch is the only way to have a history, and it can only record from the moment you start.
