WhatsApp last seen not updating, frozen or wrong: the real reasons

A last seen that stays on the same time, or shows a time that cannot be right, almost always has one of five causes: the person has not actually opened the app, they changed their privacy settings, they use a modified app that freezes the stamp, they were active on another device, or the clock on your own phone is off. Here is how to tell which.

They replied without opening WhatsApp

Answering from the notification, from the lock screen or from a smartwatch sends a message without bringing WhatsApp to the foreground. The person never shows as online and their last seen does not move, even though you just received a reply. This is the most common reason a stamp looks frozen while the person is clearly active.

They changed who can see it

If someone sets last seen to Nobody, or to My contacts except… with you on the list, the stamp does not freeze: it disappears. You see an empty line under their name. If you still see a time, this is not the cause. If the line is empty, it may be this, or you may have hidden your own last seen, which makes WhatsApp hide everyone else's from you.

A modified app is freezing it

Unofficial apps such as GB WhatsApp and WhatsApp Plus include a Freeze last seen option. It keeps showing the same old time while the person uses the app normally. A stamp that never moves for days, on a contact who plainly replies and changes their photo, is typical of this. These apps are not made by WhatsApp, and WhatsApp bans accounts that use them.

They were online somewhere else

Last seen belongs to the account, not to the phone. A session on WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp Desktop updates it. That is why a last seen can show a time when you know the person's phone was switched off or in another room: the laptop was open.

Your own phone has the wrong time

WhatsApp converts the time to your phone's clock and time zone. If your date, time or time zone is set manually and is wrong, every last seen you look at will be off by the same amount. Set the date and time to automatic in your phone's settings and look again.

How to check what is really happening

One glance at a stamp cannot separate these causes. A record can. ChatWatch links to your own WhatsApp account as an extra device, like WhatsApp Web, and logs every time a contact you add comes online and goes offline. If the log shows regular sessions while the last seen you see in WhatsApp never moves, the stamp is frozen by a modified app. If the log is empty too, WhatsApp is sending your account nothing, which means the person has hidden their presence from you.

ChatWatch records only what WhatsApp shows your account. It cannot see through privacy settings, and it cannot recover activity from before you added the contact.

Last seen problems: questions

Can someone freeze their last seen on WhatsApp?

Not in the official app. There you can hide last seen, which makes it disappear, but not freeze it. Freezing is a feature of modified apps such as GB WhatsApp.

Why does last seen show a time when their phone was off?

Because WhatsApp Web or Desktop was open. Last seen follows the account across all linked devices.

Why did last seen disappear instead of freezing?

They changed their privacy setting, blocked you, or you hid your own last seen. WhatsApp shows an empty line in all three cases.

Is the last seen time shown in my time zone or theirs?

Yours. WhatsApp displays it using the clock and time zone of the phone you are looking at.
