Read the ticks first
- One grey tick: sent, not yet delivered. Their phone has not received it; they cannot be ignoring a message they do not have.
- Two grey ticks: delivered to their phone. They may have seen the notification without opening the chat.
- Two blue ticks: they opened your chat. If the ticks stay grey for a long time while they are online, they may have read receipts turned off, which keeps ticks grey even after reading.
The ordinary reasons someone is online and silent
- They are in another conversation or a busy group. Online covers the whole app, not your chat.
- WhatsApp Web or Desktop is open on their computer for work. The account looks online for hours without anyone typing.
- They opened the app for a few seconds to check something else and left.
- They saw your message in the notification, decided to answer later, and forgot.
- Your chat is muted or archived, so it does not surface when they open the app.
- They want to reply properly and do not have the time or the words right now.
What online activity can and cannot tell you
Looking at the label by hand gives you single moments, and single moments are easy to over-read. A record over days is more honest. ChatWatch logs when the contacts you add come online and go offline, so you can see whether someone is on WhatsApp all day because of a desktop session, only at certain hours, or barely at all.
What no record can show is who they were talking to or why they did not answer. Presence is per account, not per chat, and messages are end-to-end encrypted. Chat Probability in ChatWatch compares the online times of two contacts you track and reports how much they overlap; it is a statistic about timing, not proof of a conversation.
What to do about it
If it matters, say so in words rather than monitoring the label: a short message asking for a good moment to talk gets further than watching for the word online. If the silence is a pattern in a relationship that worries you, the pattern is the thing to talk about, not the status.
And if you find yourself checking someone's status many times a day, that is worth noticing for your own sake. A tool can replace the checking; it cannot settle the question behind it.

Are they ignoring me if they are online and do not reply?
- Not necessarily. Online only means the app is open somewhere. Check whether your message has been delivered and read before drawing conclusions.
Can someone be online and not see my message?
- Yes. They can use the app without opening your chat, and a muted or archived chat is easy to miss.
Why are the ticks grey if they were online?
- Either they did not open your chat, or they have read receipts turned off, which keeps ticks grey after reading.
Can I see who they are talking to instead?
- No. Nobody can from the outside. WhatsApp shows presence for the account as a whole, and message content is encrypted.
